"Essential" Caravanning Accessories

"Essential" Caravanning Accessories

When it comes to caravan accessories, everyone has different ideas on what’s essential. Our thought is that it’s the accessories that keep you safe on and off the road … for others it’s all about comfort and luxury.

If you’re a first-time caravan owner, you might be confused by all the well-meaning advice you receive on what’s “essential”. If you’ve just spent your life savings on a caravan, you’re probably conscious of forking out more cash on accessories … especially ones you may not need.

These are the accessories we deem necessary for safety:

Towing Mirrors

We stock Milenco Aero 3 towing mirrors as we’ve found them to be the best temporary solution. They’re easy to fit and give great visibility for the budget conscious. They’re also stable whilst towing at speed or passing trucks.

We also supply Clearview mirrors for those who want a more permanent solution.

Reversing Camera

Manoeuvring or reversing into a caravan site at the end of a long day can sometimes work against what you’re trying to achieve by travelling … bliss is replaced with a heated argument that provides entertainment for the rest of the park already having beer-o-clock.

A reversing camera, teamed with towing mirrors, eliminates blind spots for safer vehicle manoeuvring and reversing.

Wheel Chocks

Even though your campsite might look level, un-hitching is always a risk without wheel chocks. Do the back of your car or shins a favour and use wheel chocks before un-hitching. We've seen many a caravan roll away in our "level" yard.

Our Deluxe Starter Packs have both wheel chocks and levelling ramps included and are great for those just starting out with their first caravan.

Levelling Ramps

Unless you want your door swinging open annoyingly or shutting whilst you’re carrying everything you need for the BBQ in one trip … or water not draining from your sink ... or a roll-together bed … then these should make your list of caravan ‘must haves’.

Levelling ramps are available for single or dual axle caravans so please consider this when purchasing.

Ampfibian Power Adaptor

The Ampfibian Power Adaptor allows you to safely and legally connect your 15A caravan to any domestic 10A power supply. They’re not just one of the most popular caravan accessories … they’re one of the most essential to ensure your safety.

If you’re not going to have one of these then a smoke alarm is ever so important.

Smoke Alarm

Under NSW laws, from 25 Feb 2011, you must have a smoke alarm installed in all moveable dwellings including campervans and caravans.

Remember ... smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and fire blankets save lives.

Trail-A-Mate Caravan Hydraulic Jockey Wheel and Jack

Whilst a Trail-A-Mate Caravan Hydraulic Jockey Wheel and Jack isn't an absolute essential for safety … they’re great for instances where a standard jockey wheel doesn’t allow enough clearance to re-hitch your caravan … perhaps because it’s sunk due to soft ground. Some deem them much safer than traditional jockey wheels.

Weight Distribution System

A weight distribution system is generally recommended whenever the weight of your trailer exceeds 50 per cent of your vehicle’s weight. If your car and caravan are sitting level when hitched, then there’s a chance you don’t need a WDS.

If you do decide you should have one, then be aware that it may change the cornering ability of your vehicle.

These are just our suggestions and worthwhile considering.
